Lyons man heads to State Prison for haunting victim

On October 20th, 2013, Michael J. Newsome, residing then at 106 Catherine Street in Lyons, beat a woman so severely she required plastic surgery for her facial injuries.

Newsome, now age 42, was indicted by a Wayne County Grand Jury on Tuesday (10/22) as a fugitive. He was charged on Superior Court warrants with two counts of Assault in the first degree, one count of Assault in the second degree and 1 count of Criminal Obstruction of Breathing.

On Thursday, (10/24) at about 8:45 a.m. officers of the New York State Police Violent Felony Task Force, working with information supplied by Lyons Police, took the suspect into custody at a residence on Bay Street in the City of Rochester.

Newsome, who has an extensive police record, was taken in front of Wayne County Court Judge Dennis Kehoe who arraigned him and committed him to Wayne County Jail on No Bail, where he remains today.

Even though the victim had a Court Order of Protection, Newsome continued to send letters to the woman while still incarcerated.

A Wayne County Grand Jury indicted Newsome again, this time on 23 counts, including Criminal Tampering With a Witness, Conspiracy in the 5th Degree, three counts of Criminal Contempt in the 1st Degree and numerous counts of Criminal Contempt in the 2nd Degree.

Newsome was arraigned on the new charges in Lyons Village Court and remanded back to the Wayne County Jail. His trail was set to begin on the original charges begins Monday (9/29) in County Court.

On Thursday, Newsome pled guilty in County Court to all counts in the first indictment, including Assault 1st and 2nd. He will appear for sentencing on October 30th to receive a 10 year sentence with a five year post release supervision.

On the new indictment from Wednesday, Newsome pled guilty to two counts of Criminal Contempt in the 1st Degree and will be sentenced to 1 to 3 years to serve concurrent with his initial indictment.
