You start with a plot of land that lends itself to the perfect 20 minute excursion in the woods. Hidden in the bushes around every turn, ghosts and goblins prepare to emerge. Before you are even loaded on the creepy wagon, an old barn provides a walking terror ghost walk.
On the bright side, refreshments and beverages with a mixture of laughter abound.
The haunted property, barn, and vision belongs to Chip and Lorraine Rieck (1485 Walworth/Penfield Road, (Route 441) in the Town of Walworth. The worn path that passes the eerie pond is traversed by three tractor-pulled hay wagons supplied by area farmers. Before any of the magic occurs months of planning goes into the event. Gananda and Wayne Central student volunteers - each choosing their costume of ghoulishness - are aligned along the course the wagon traverses.
Parking and other numerous positions are filled by more volunteers, some coming from other area Rotary clubs, others the parents of the students.
On average, the wagon drivers and haunting announcers on each trip, make about 16 rounds each night of the yearly event, rain, or shine.
Tickets are $10 per rider at-the-door, (cash, venmo or credit card), with pre-sale of a number of reserved wagons, usually sold out well in advance. Individual riders, couples and families are ushered on in an orderly manner for a well planned event. The three weekends, that began this past Friday and Saturday, continues on Friday and Saturday October 18th and 19th and wraps up on Friday, October 25th.
The Gananda Rotary fundraiser provides for student scholarships and programs throughout the year. The participating students gain invaluable community service hours and loads of fun. Practice and costume adjustments prepare the crews for the onslaught of crowds that have made this event an annual can’t-miss. Rules of hay wagon, scare house etiquette and approaches are mandatory. The fun begins at 7 p.m. each night with last tickets sold at 9:30 p.m. each night. For more information and ticket information call 585-739-9521.
