Two Wayne County Sheriff SROs (Student Resource Officers) were injured in separate incidents last week.
At the BOCES Williamson facility, an interaction with a juvenile resulted in the SRO breaking his leg. Sheriff Milby stated the Deputy will be out of work due to the incident.
"In recent years, law enforcement in the United States has seen a decline in enrollment, and we have not escaped that. We were able to maintain, and expand our School Resource Officer program, which in my opinion, is proving invaluable. SROs are so much more than just building security. SROs are building relationships with our future. Children have the opportunity to see for themselves that officers are there for them; for their well-being, for their safety and security. They soon realize that we are there for everyone. Daily interaction with students and staff are proving to people that the narrative that has been out there the last few years, is false. With the violence that we hear about every day, SROs bring a level of safety and security to the learning environment that is being lost all across America. No student should feel unsafe in their learning environment and teachers should feel safe while tending to the already difficult task of educating our youth," stated Sheriff Milby.
In the second case on Tuesday 10/29) afternoon at 12:12 p.m., two female adults were upset concerning a student matter, which resulted in both an SRO and school employee receiving injuries. (See complete story and photos on Page C-1)
"Unfortunately, there are those who continue to teach their children to be oppositional to those that are there to help teach them, and to keep them safe. In the case at the Sodus Middle School, I am certainly glad that we had an SRO assigned to the school. Who knows, with this kind of behavior, who would have been the object of the aggression if the Deputy wasn’t there. Our Deputy gave both of those women ample opportunity to leave the building once they were notified that they were not welcome. To lay hands on a law enforcement officer is completely unacceptable, and to display that behavior in front of your child is proof of what you are teaching that child. The first words out of the woman’s mouth to the transporting officer was the request for her appearance ticket so she could go home. That is what the alterations to our criminal justice system is teaching people, and that is what people are teaching their children. Holding court in the street has become the new expected right, and this must change. There is no impulse control, because there are no perceived consequences. Our system is teaching people to do as they wish, and maybe they will have to pay a fine for their deeds later," commented Sheriff Milby.
