On Friday, November 8, 2024, the Rochester Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution held a Dedication Ceremony at East Palmyra Cemetery to unveil a William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historical Patriot Marker in honor the Revolutionary War veterans buried there.
Braving the windy conditions, members of the public watched as the SAR, dressed in vintage attire, unveiled the historical marker and honored the veterans with a salute, using replicas of vintage flintlock rifles and muskets, followed by the playing of taps.
Following the ceremony, State Senator Pam Helming spoke and presented the President of the Cemetery Association with a NYS Senate Citation. She was followed by Assemblyman Brian Manktelow who also honored the veterans and presented the Association President with a NYS Assembly Citation.
The Pomeroy Foundation has many Historical roadside markers, but the Pomeroy Historical Patriot Markers are the most difficult to acquire. The Foundation requires that there be proof that the patriot was actually associated in some way with the Revolutionary War. You need documentation of what their association was and when it occurred. In the case of soldiers, you need copies of Muster Rolls, Payroll Records, Pension Records, pictures of the actual original headstone in the cemetery requesting the Marker. If the headstone has been replaced, it doesn’t count.
Considering all this documentation is over 200 years old, it is difficult to find. Many times, proof has been destroyed by fire in the old town archives which held the information or churches that originally managed the cemetery, which was the case in East Palmyra Cemetery. Once all this documentation is gathered, it has to be submitted to the one Sons of the American Revolution liaison to the Pomeroy Foundation in NYS for review. Then it is forwarded to the foundation for their approval.
The East Palmyra Cemetery documentation was submitted in April and the Marker was received at the end of October, just in time for Dedication prior to Veterans Day.
