It all came down in the heat of the moment.

On Wednesday (8/24) Newark Village Police were dispatched to a residence for a complaint that William Lewis, age 26, of 215 West Miller Street in Newark had violated a Stay Away Court Order of Protection.

The Court Order required Lewis to stay at least 500 feet away from his ex-wife. Instead, lewis stood at a neighbor’s residence, flipping the finger at the ex.

When police arrived, Lewis told the officers, in very strong language, what they could do, then took off on foot.

After taking the ex-wife’s statement, Lewis was spotted by police at another nearby residence and again took off running. He disappeared behind the Dollar General Store, and at that time ,the Newark K-9 dog, Mac and Officer Dan Weegar found Lewis in the bushes. Lewis then hopped on top of the store dumpster, yelling he was going to kill both the dog and the officer.

A scuffle ensued and K-9 “Mac”, put the chomp on Lewis’s leg and hand. Unfortunately, in all the excitement and adrenaline rush, Officer Weegar was also bit in the leg by the dog.

Both Lewis and Officer Weegar were taken to Newark-Wayne Hospital and treated for puncture wounds.

Lewis was then arraigned on charges of Criminal Contempt in the 2nd Degree and Resisting Arrest. He was remanded to jail on $3500 cash/$7000 bond to reappear in Court on September 7th. Other felony charges may be pending.
