Gananda Central School District has announced that no major injuries were sustained in a school bus accident that occurred along Route 31F in Macedon at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 2nd.
A small bus transporting seven private and parochial students from Gananda and Pal-Mac Central School Districts was rear-ended by a car while traveling east on Route 31F in Macedon near the area of Frey and West Walworth Roads.
As the bus attempted to make a left-hand turn, a car collided with the rear of the school bus causing the bus to tip over on its side.
Working with a good Samaritan, the students were able to successfully exit the bus from the rear. All students were able to walk away from the scene of the accident; however, two students and the bus driver were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and observation.
“We are thankful no one was seriously injured in this accident today,” stated Dr. Shawn VanScoy, Superintendent of Gananda School Distict. “It was the quick response by community members and our local law officials which helped ensure the safety of the students and we are grateful for their efforts.
Parents of students involved in the incident received notification by Gananda’s Department of Transportation moments after the collision. The Macedon and South Macedon Fire Departments, Macedon Police Department, Macedon and Walworth Ambulance, and New York State Troopers were all on scene.
According to Macedon Police Chief John Colella, the driver of the car, who sustained injuries and was taken to the Strong Hospital following the accidient, explained to law enforcement that he “nodded off”, due to a medical condition. His vehicle was badly damaged and ended up just off the roadway in a ditch. The school bus, which tipped onto its side, came to rest in the driveway of the mobile home park on Route 31F (near West Walworth Road).
He noted that passersby helped the students exit the bus, and the scene was secured by Macedon Police, assisted by the New York State Police and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, as well as Macedon Center and South Macedon Fire and Rescue, and Walworth Ambulance.
Chief Colella indicated that the roadway would be closed down for about 2 hours, and the accident reconstruction team would investigate further. Charges may be pending, but none were made at the scene.
