The Wayne County Office of the Sheriff’s reported the arrest Richard Barnes, age 33, of 114 Willowick Drive, Lithonia, Georgia on Wednesday (7/20) at 3 a.m.

Barnes fled from Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Burnett at about 11:45p.m. when a traffic stop was initiated on Old Lyons Road in the Town of Lyons. Barnes sped off to negotiate a curve at Arcadia Zurich Norris Road, which caused the vehicle to crash into an embankment.

Barnes then fought with the Deputy Burnett, following a brief foot pursuit and altercation. Barnes was able to get away from the Deputy and was able to enter the Burnett’s police vehicle, and drive away.

After a brief pursuit, Barnes drove the Sheriff’s vehicle off of the roadway at Mud Mills Road and Route 88, which caused damage to the police unit. He was immediately taken into custody.
Barnes was charged with two Counts of Grand Larceny 4th degree, Assault in the 2nd degree, Grand Larceny in the 3rd degree, Criminal Mischief 4th degree, two counts of Resisting Arrest, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, two counts of Obstructing Governmental Administration and various vehicle and traffic charges.

Barnes was remanded to the Wayne County Jail without bail, as he has several prior felony convictions. Deputy Burnett suffered from minor injuries during the confrontation with Barnes but is expected to make a full recovery.
