“This is an historic building and it needs to be preserved. Someone had to do it, so I was the one,” said Ernie Evangelist of Lyons, who purchased the old Doctor’s office building at 30 Church Street, at the auction for the $10,000 minimum bid.
Both Ernie and his wife Andrea “Andi”, who was Executive Director of the Wayne County Museum and Historical Society in Lyons, were both very familiar with the history of the building. “It was Dr. James Arseneau’s office. We knew him as kids growing up in Lyons. His wife, a science teacher at Lyons High School, lived there after he died in 1960, until her retirement,” reported Andi.
They do not know yet what the building use will be, although they are aware of some restrictions on its use. “We were told that it could not be flipped and sold for 3 years, and that it cannot be a residence,” said Evangelist. Once they are able to look inside the building (which will not be until July 29th), they can further decide what they will use it for.
The building at 24 Church Street, was purchased at auction by Richard Santelli, who is a builder from Sodus Point, but currently lives in Florida. but is reported to be moving back to Lyons.
Santelli was able to obtain the building for $7,500, which was also the minimum bid. Although sources at the auction heard him say he would make it a “beautiful showplace” in Lyons, he has not yet revealed his plans. This building on the eastern side of the Courthouse in Lyons, is best known as the Park Bakery Building. It was built in 1886 and was most recently used for storage and as a County print shop.
