“Blow Off Day” in Sodus Point produces numerous arrests

Local bars and restaurants promote it as the annual “Blow Off Day” in Sodus Point. A day where service employees pick a day after the July 4th weekend, skip work and party. The event has grown to the point where, not only bar and restaurant employees participate, but thousands of other people skip work, imbibe and party like there is no tomorrow.
Sodus Bay was full of boaters who simply lingered in areas and drank throughout the afternoon and evening. At one point police estimated there were almost two thousand boaters on the sandbar off Sodus Point and the streets on the Point were jammed.

Unfortunately, too many people take it too far. Fortunately, police knew that Wednesday (7/13) was coming and prepared with extra patrols and presence.

Wayne County Sheriff, Barry Virts, said his force was aided by the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies to prepare in case of possible problems.

Sheriff Virts said that the growth of social media has seen “Blow Off Day” almost double in size from year to year. “It is huge. It has just grown and grown.”

No fewer than six Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) stops in Sodus were tallied by press time and numerous fights added to the arrest totals.

Precious LefloreOne 16 year-old girl was assaulted while walking with a man. This led to the arrest of Precious LaFlore, age 34, of 17 Curtiss Avenue in Sodus at 7:17 p.m. on Wednesday. It is alleged LaFlore approached the girl from behind, punching her in the face two times. The victim received a cut lip and swollen eye.

LaFlore was charged with Assault in the 3rd Degree, arraigned and remanded to jail on $250 cash bail.

At 7:15 p.m. the Wayne County Office of the Sheriff reported the arrest of a two subjects following a disturbance on Bay Street in the Village of Sodus Point.

Stephan Sykesrice_justinStephan E. Sykes, age 40, and Justin A. Rice, age 30, both of Rochester were arrested after Deputies observed them engaged in a physical fight on Bay Street. Both Sykes and Rice were charged with Disorderly Conduct. Rice was additionally charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree.

Sykes and Rice were arraigned in the Town of Sodus Court and remanded to the Wayne County Jail in lieu of bail.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office chalked up four DWIs on Wednesday in Sodus.

collins_danielDaniel A. Collins II, age 31 of 6476 Kelly Road in the Town of Sodus was arrested following a traffic stop on State Route 14 in the Town of Sodus. Collins was reportedly involved in a physical disturbance at the Margaretta Boat Launch and his vehicle was observed leaving the scene. Patrol located the vehicle and observed it traveling south on State Route 14. Collins was arrested for DWI, with a BAC of .15% and issued multiple traffic summons. Collins was released to appear in the Sodus Town Court on August 24th.

Ryan T. Helms, age 31, of Dartmouth Street in Rochester, was traveling West on Ridge Road in Sodus when he was stopped by Police for Moving From Lane Unsafely. He was subsequently charged with DWI, Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC of .18% and Moved From Lane Unsafely.

Helms was released on appearance tickets and is to appear before the Town of Sodus Court.

Stephanie BernieStephanie A. Bernie, age 30 of White Hill Drive in Rochester was stopped for Failing to Maintain Designated Lane. Upon further investigation, Deputies determined that Bernie was operating under the influence of alcohol. After field sobriety testing Bernie refused any other tests. She was charged with DWI, Fail to Use Designated Lane, Fail to Submit to a Breath Test and Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test.

Bernie was arraigned at the Town of Sodus Court and was remanded in lieu of bail to the Wayne County Jail.

johnson_jamesonJameson A. Johnson, age 32, of County Line Road in Ontario, was charged with DWI with a BAC of .15% following a traffic stop on Lake Road in Sodus at 10:26 p.m. He was issued appearance tickets and released. He is scheduled to appear in the Sodus Town Court to answer to the charges.

Carson T. Calabria, (No photo available) age 29, of 284 Westminster Road in Greece was stopped by State Police following a traffic complaint on Ridge Road in Sodus. He was subsequently arrested for DWI and Refusal to Submit to a Breath test, arraigned and released to reappear in Sodus Court on August 10th.

Chase H. McCarthy, age 19, of 7503 Stoney Lonesome Road in Williamson was stopped by State Police at 7:59 p.m. on Lake Road in Sodus Point on a Cell Phone violation and subsequently arrested for DWI/BAC with a BAC of .09%. He was released on appearance tickets for 8/24.
