A call came in to the Lincoln Fire department just before 2:00 pm on Wednesday (2/8) of a man trapped at a worksite in Walworth.
Firefighters responded to the area of 968 Whitney Road (near Swadling Road) in Walworth, at the Weber Farm, where a Verizon cell tower was being installed.
Lincoln Fire Chief, Steve Gallaher was first on the scene and found an independent contractor, working on the cell tower installation, trapped under a 30-40 ft section of the tower.
It was estimated to be about 10,000 lbs. The accident, according to Gallaher, appeared to occur when the jack stand holding the cell tower section either fell, or the stand broke, tipping the section over on the worker. Fifty-one year old Tobi Koons of South Bend, Indiana had his chest crushed.
A crane at the scene was immediately employed to lift the tower piece off the man’s chest. When Gallaher approached, the man was sitting up against the piece that had fallen and he appeared to be in extreme pain.
Mercy Flight was called for a transport, and Walworth Ambulance arrived on the scene to access and triage Koons until Mercy Flight arrived. He remains in serious condition.
