On Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at approximately 9:11 a.m., the State Police in Wolcott responded to a car into a garbage truck fatal accident on East Port Bay Road between Furnace and Wheeler Road.
The operator, Floyd Yonker, age 77, of Alport Street in the Village of Wolcott, was traveling southbound on East Port Bay Road when he struck the rear end of a parked garbage truck that was unoccupied at the time of the crash.
Yonker was taken to Newark-Wayne Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Peggy Finewood was on the way to the store, driving behind Yonker, when the crash happened.
“There was a gentleman in front of me and we saw the garbage truck on the side of the road, parked, picking up garbage, obviously,” said Finewood. “I noticed the guy in front of me wasn’t slowing down or breaking or moving over, and then it was just like a huge impact.”
The roadway was closed for hours as accident reconstruction teams worked to determine the cause of the crash. It was believed sun glare in Yonker’s view was most probably the contributing factor.
